That gorgeous pink color? Flamingos aren’t born with it!
Baby flamingos hatch with fluffy gray or white feathers. They get their famous pink color from the food they eat — tiny shrimp and algae that contain a natural pigment called carotenoids. The more they eat, the pinker they get! If they stopped eating those foods, they would actually turn white again.

Try coloring a baby flamingo in white or gray next to a bright pink adult flamingo! Ask your kids: “What color would YOU turn if you ate only one food?”
