Did You Know? Bananas Are Berries, But Strawberries Aren't!
Botanically speaking, bananas qualify as berries — but strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries don't!
Bananas Are Berries! 🍌
Get ready for this: bananas are technically berries, but strawberries aren’t!
In botany (plant science), a berry is a fruit that comes from a single flower with one ovary and has seeds inside. Bananas, grapes, and even avocados meet this definition! But strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries actually grow from flowers with multiple ovaries, so scientists don’t count them as true berries.
Fruit Coloring Time 🎨
Color a pile of “real” berries — bananas, grapes, and watermelons — with a sign that says “True Berries”! Ask your kids: “If a banana is a berry, what OTHER foods do you think might be berries?”
Fun fact bonus: Bananas are naturally slightly radioactive because they contain potassium! But don’t worry — you’d have to eat 10 million bananas at once for it to be dangerous. 🍌
